Pictured is Silybum marianum also know as St. Mary’s thistle or milk thistle. A wonderful herb which is used to treat a variety of liver and gallbladder problems including abnormal liver function, alcoholic liver damage, fatty liver and preventing gallstone formation.
When the liver is congested and not functioning at its optimum, or there is damage, due to overconsumption of alcohol, rich foods, hydrogenated oils or recreational drugs, one can start to feel fatigued, nauseous, experience low immunity, hormonal imbalance, low libido, reduced cognitive function, insomnia, depression and irritability. The liver is like the factory of our body, performing many functions including detoxifying chemicals, medications, hormones and metabolising carbohydrates and fats.
So, this organ is busy, and it needs lots of love for longevity and for us to be feeling our best. Traditional medicine practices including naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicine believe that the liver has a significant affect on our emotions. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s believed that stagnant liver qi can result in feelings of irritability, anger, frustration and depression. In naturopathy we call this feeling "liverish". Ever wondered why you sometimes feel cranky the next few days after a night out? No judgement if you can relate to this, I like to enjoy a few drinks in moderation myself. Emotional imbalance is complex and can of course be due to a number of external and internal factors including other aspects of one’s physiological and psychological health, environment and past experiences.
If you’ve been feeling imbalanced or you are struggling with alcohol cravings or any beforementioned symptoms, you may like to consider booking an appointment with me. I recommend doing a liver detox or taking herbal medicines under the care of a naturopath, to ensure its safety particularly if you are taking pharmaceutical medications or you have current or pre-existing health conditions.
If you are struggling with depression or anxiety, I also recommend visiting your GP for a mental health care plan and referral. Here are some additional contacts if you need them.
